Mewgenics Surpasses 150,000 Sales in Just 6 Hours; Developer Exceeds Expectations

The latest title from the creator of The Binding of Isaac has launched to remarkable success.

Mewgenics, the new cat-breeding tactics roguelike from the mind behind The Binding of Isaac, has made an explosive entrance into the gaming world. In a matter of just six hours since its launch at 6am PT, the game has not only recouped its development costs, which spanned nearly seven years, but has also exceeded internal sales forecasts and is nearing the peak player count of Isaac itself. Developer Tyler Glaiel shared his excitement, stating, "So far this is beating expectations by quite a lot." He noted that it likely took less than three hours for the game to cover its development expenses. He added, "It's a bigger launch than any of the Isaac expansions already, and it’s only been a few hours." Edmund McMillen, Glaiel's partner and well-known for titles such as Isaac and Super Meat Boy, provided a striking comparison. He recalled that the highest sales day for any of his games was for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which moved about 40,000 units on its first day. In stark contrast, Mewgenics managed to sell approximately 152,000 copies within its first five and a half hours. "Isn't that kind of insane?" McMillen exclaimed. As of this writing, Mewgenics boasts over 63,000 concurrent players on Steam, steadily approaching Rebirth’s all-time record of 70,701. Glaiel remarked, "We knew the game was good and would do well, but Isaac is *HUGE*, so we thought it was unlikely to surpass that." Additionally, nearly 85,000 viewers are tuning in on Twitch, including McMillen, who expressed his enjoyment in watching streamer Northernlion excel at the game. The game has also received a warm critical reception, currently holding an 89 rating on Metacritic and a 96% positivity rate in user reviews on Steam, with around 1,700 reviews logged. One review described Mewgenics as "a fantastic tactical RPG that offers over a hundred hours of engaging roguelike gameplay. Just when you think you have it all figured out, it surprises you with something unexpected and delightfully bizarre – and likely a catchy original song to boot."
