Marathon Update 1.0.0.4 Eases Gameplay While Maintaining AI Challenge
The latest update for Marathon introduces adjustments to balance gameplay, responding to player feedback about difficulty, while Bungie reassures fans that the game’s AI will remain a formidable opponent.
Marathon has rolled out its first major patch since launch, bringing a variety of crucial balance adjustments. The recent Update 1.0.0.4 aims to simplify the experience for players, addressing concerns over the scarcity of ammo and healing items, as well as the formidable nature of the enemy AI. Among the changes, the number of Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates that spawn on the initial map, Perimeter, has been increased. Additionally, players will find more starting ammo in MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne free Sponsored Kits, while the drop rate for EMP grenades from UESC Grenadiers has been decreased. In combat, the auditory range for gunfire and explosions has been extended. Furthermore, the health of most UESC enemies and the shield health of UESC bosses have been slightly reduced. Bungie has preemptively addressed potential backlash from dedicated fans by emphasizing that the game’s AI will continue to pose a significant challenge. "With this change we hope to alleviate some of the resource burden in both Solos and Crews when it comes to engaging UESC in combat," the developer stated. "The goal here is to allow your bullets and meds to go further without diminishing the challenge posed by UESCs. We are aware of the feedback that players value the friction provided by our UESC combatants, and we have no intention of altering that aspect." In response to concerns about the patch being a concession to players who find the game too difficult, Bungie community chief Cosmo assured fans via Twitter that UESC enemies "will still f**k you up." The update also includes a nerf to thermal scopes, while Overrun sees an increase in default ammo capacity. The long-awaited rewards pass and store modifications have now been implemented as well. This patch arrives amidst ongoing discussions regarding the overall success of Marathon, which is a vital release for Bungie following recent financial challenges, acknowledged even by parent company Sony. Although player numbers from Sony or Microsoft remain undisclosed, Steam recorded a peak player count of 88,337, indicating that Marathon is maintaining a stable presence on the platform. However, sales figures and insights from either Sony or Bungie regarding whether the game is meeting expectations are yet to be revealed. Players are speculating whether the game's steep difficulty is causing some to disengage. The patch notes for Update 1.0.0.4 are as follows: Item Economy: - Increased the spawn rate of Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates on Perimeter. - Boosted starting ammo in MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne free Sponsored Kits. - Lowered the frequency of EMP grenades dropped by UESC Grenadiers. Combat: - Fixed an issue leading to instant player deaths during confinement events. - Resolved a problem where the shield break screen effects could persist under certain conditions. - Expanded the range at which gunfire and explosions can be heard. Weapons: Thermal Scopes: - Reduced clarity of thermal scope visuals on targets. - Adjusted maximum distances for thermal highlights: Pistol (from 55m to 40m), Rifles/LMGs/SMGs (from 65m to 60m), Precision Rifles (from 100m to 80m), Snipers (from 180m to 100m). Overrun: - Increased default ammo capacity by five. Runners: Rook: - Fixed a bug where backpacks could be lost during exfiltration. - Corrected Rook's position display on the map. - Enhanced CyAc reputation gain from exfiltrating with Rook. - Rook's Faction reputation bonus for exfiltration now matches that of solo players. - Rook's WSTR shotgun will now spawn as Compromised, necessitating the use of a Matter Fixative during the run for exfiltration. UESC: - Slightly reduced health for most UESC enemies and shield health for UESC bosses. Developer Note: This adjustment is intended to ease resource strain in both Solo and Crew modes while engaging UESC in combat. We want to ensure your resources are utilized effectively without compromising the challenge our UESC adversaries present. Contracts: - Increased the default distance for objective navigation points from 10m to 20m. Introducing NuCal Contract: - Fixed an issue where enemy Crews could hear NuCal contract VO audio and subtitles from extended distances. Introducing Traxus Contract: - Reduced difficulty for the UESC Commander encounter. Zones: Outpost: - Temporarily disabled the switch access route to the Broken Wing on Outpost. Developer Note: The "Broken Wing" entrance to the Pinwheel will be temporarily disabled for tuning adjustments, as its current state trivializes access. We are making modifications to align the entrance with the risk/reward balance of the Pinwheel while maintaining the essence of a stealthy approach. Players can still use other methods to enter the Pinwheel during this time. Rewards Pass and Store: - Fixed issues with Silk balances and bundle prices. - Adjusted the LUX bundle pricing from (1000 + 100) to (1000 + 120). Stability: - Resolved a rare issue leading to dedicated server crashes. - Fixed various client crash issues. General: - Addressed an issue preventing players from completing the new player introduction mission due to locked doors. - Updated Perimeter (Beginner) description on the Zone Select screen. - Fixed a bug causing the Text Chat window to remain open. - Resolved crashes related to IME Keyboard usage and typing speed. - Eliminated an extended black screen during the map load sequence.
