Rare Early Build of GTA 4 Surfaces After Discovery of Abandoned Xbox 360 Developer Kit

An unexpected find at a Scottish flea market reveals a developer kit linked to Rockstar Games, featuring a beta version of GTA 4.

A recent visit to a flea market in Scotland led to an extraordinary find: an Xbox 360 developer kit that was once used by Rockstar Games, now containing an early beta version of Grand Theft Auto 4. The individual behind this remarkable discovery, Jan, initially did not recognize the significance of the item he stumbled upon, perceiving it merely as a standard 'Phat Xbox 360.' Upon closer inspection, he noticed the Rockstar Games logo and the attached 'Sidecar' expansion device. "I frequently visit car boot sales, both for reselling and adding to my personal collection," Jan recounted. "While browsing, I spotted what I recognized as a Phat Xbox 360, but I initially mistook its Sidecar attachment for something unusual." Unsure of its true worth but sensing it could be valuable, Jan asked the seller for the price, which was a mere five pounds (approximately $6.50). After ensuring the seller had change, he purchased the kit for ten pounds (around $13). Only after returning home did Jan realize the true treasure he had acquired. Since then, he has shared the contents online, prompting dataminers and tech specialists to attempt to get it operational. Although he tried to sell the device, which reportedly lacks additional files or games, offers came in, including a £1,000 ($1,300) bid, but an eBay listing was removed due to the kit's software restrictions. He is now considering private offers. What exactly does this developer kit hold? One excited fan exclaimed, "HOLY. S**t. Something big has dropped." The 2007 version found is described as "partially wiped," yet savvy individuals have managed to recover a majority of the files, which include early character models, weapon designs, items, vehicles, maps, and more. These discoveries are allowing fans to compare the initial version to the final retail product. Notable findings include a ferry that was seemingly discarded after an early trailer release, leading to playful comments about the possibility of it becoming a drivable boat. One fan shared, "My jaw is on the floor... This isn't a late build; this is VERY beta. Many of the radio stations are entirely different…" Another user claimed to have found hints of an abandoned zombie minigame, while early cut-scenes have emerged, showcasing previously unseen perspectives. Recently, some have even managed to run executable files, revealing playable but unstable sections. "Today has literally been a dream come true for me lol," one fan expressed. "I can't wait to find some time to dive into these files for more surprises." The excitement surrounding this discovery will certainly keep the Grand Theft Auto community engaged while they await the arrival of GTA 6, set to launch on November 19. Rockstar's parent company Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, has indicated that marketing for the upcoming title will commence this summer, following the now confirmed release date. Discussions about the pricing of GTA 6 are heating up, with speculation suggesting that Rockstar may charge as much as $100 for the title, although no official confirmation has been made. Zelnick has also dismissed rumors regarding the game being a digital-only release at launch. In a light-hearted twist, PlayStation users have taken to amusing their friends by adding GTA 6 to their Recently Played lists.
