Petition for Destiny 3 Gains Over 120,000 Signatures as Hopes Dwindle
A petition urging Sony to approve the development of Destiny 3 has surpassed 120,000 signatures, although the game's future remains uncertain.
A growing online petition is gaining traction, calling on Sony to initiate the development of Destiny 3, with signatures surpassing the 120,000 mark. However, the likelihood of the game being produced seems slim. This week, Bungie, the developer behind the franchise, announced that the final update for Destiny 2 will arrive in June, marking a significant conclusion to the series that launched in 2014. The announcement has sparked concerns among fans regarding Bungie’s future, especially amid rumors of impending layoffs and the lukewarm reception of Marathon, their latest hardcore extraction shooter. As fans express their desire for a new installment, Harley Casto, the petition’s organizer, emphasized the community's eagerness for fresh narratives, gameplay innovations, and new adventures. "The potential for Destiny 3 to inspire future gamers and maintain the Guardian spirit is evident," Casto stated. "We urge fans to sign the petition and support our collective wish for Destiny 3, helping to elevate our passion for the series to new heights." Despite the overwhelming support, the prospects for Destiny 3 seem bleak. Reports indicate that Bungie is facing significant layoffs soon due to the cessation of Destiny 2's support, and there is no active development for Destiny 3 at this time. Although Bungie is keen on exploring new ideas within the Destiny universe, Destiny 3 does not appear to be part of their plans. Many fans believed that following the conclusion of the narrative arc with The Final Shape expansion, Bungie would have begun work on Destiny 3. However, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier pointed out that the financial investment required for such a project is a major factor. The costs associated with AAA game development have escalated dramatically, with some games reportedly costing hundreds of millions to produce. Marathon, for instance, had a budget exceeding $250 million, while other projects, such as Sony’s now-canceled live-service shooter Concord, had initial development costs around $200 million. In a climate where the gaming industry is facing challenges, PlayStation is tightening its budget and increasing console prices. With numerous live-service games failing to gain traction, Sony is unlikely to take a significant risk on Destiny 3. As these developments unfold, many fans are taking to social media to bid farewell to the franchise, reminiscing about their experiences with Destiny. Meanwhile, Sony continues to support Marathon, focusing on content updates to bolster player engagement. While the petition’s momentum reflects a strong desire for Destiny 3, it may ultimately remain an unfulfilled wish.
