Take-Two Executive Envisions Major Growth for 2K's WWE Series
The head of Take-Two Interactive sees significant potential for the success of 2K's WWE video games, citing ongoing chances to enhance the game's quality.
The head of Take-Two Interactive has expressed optimism about the potential growth of 2K's WWE video game franchise, indicating that it could achieve much greater success than its current standing. He emphasized that there are continuous opportunities to elevate the quality of the games. While the WWE series has enjoyed success, it tends to be overshadowed by the more lucrative NBA franchise, which generates substantial revenue for Take-Two. Both franchises are developed by Visual Concepts, located in California. The latest installment, WWE 2K26, received a score of 7/10. Critics noted that the game benefits from a solid foundation but has seen changes that may be more detrimental than beneficial. WWE 2K27 has already been confirmed, with a release anticipated in March 2027. In their most recent financial update, Take-Two reported a 20% increase in recurrent consumer spending for WWE 2K26 compared to the previous year, with players logging over 85 million matches—a 7% rise over WWE 2K25. Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, stated that he sees room for substantial growth in the WWE franchise, noting that Visual Concepts is always striving for improvement. "We're proud of our Metacritic score and the performance of the title," Zelnick remarked. "We have strong partnerships with TKO, led by Nick Khan, and WWE continues to expand. The team there is excelling, and we are excited to collaborate with TKO and WWE. "I genuinely believe there are ongoing opportunities to enhance the game's quality. We can provide consumers with more of what they desire. Our team at Visual Concepts is committed to improvement. We don’t indulge in self-congratulation; we recognize that overconfidence can hinder ongoing success. I envision this title potentially growing two or three times its current size if we delight our consumers and offer them fresh, unexpected content that aligns with the brand they cherish. That’s our responsibility." A key question remains: how can Visual Concepts innovate to elevate the WWE series to the level Zelnick envisions? Recently, monetization has sparked controversy among players, particularly regarding the changes made to the Ringside Pass system in WWE 2K26, which were implemented after significant community backlash. Upon introducing the new battle pass format, many players voiced concerns about its replacement of the traditional six downloadable content packs. The main issue was that unlocking roster members through the new system required extensive gameplay to complete all 40 tiers of the pass, rather than the immediate access that previous DLC packs provided. Consequently, even those who opted for the premium tiers of the Ringside Pass found themselves needing to invest more time than expected to unlock the wrestlers they had already paid for. In response to feedback, from Season 2 onwards, all four characters in the Premium track of the pass are now available immediately at Tier 1. Additionally, the experience points required to advance through each tier were reduced from 800 to 625, a figure that 2K assures will not increase in the future. Each Ringside Pass is priced at $9.99/£8.99 per season, with an annual option available for $49.99/£44.99. As anticipation builds for WWE 2K27, many are eager to see what enhancements Visual Concepts will introduce to broaden the game's appeal.
