ArenaNet Executive Claims MMOs Are 'Stagnant' and Guild Wars 3 Will Introduce Fresh Concepts

ArenaNet is optimistic that Guild Wars 3 will bring innovative ideas to the MMO landscape, which they believe has reached a point of stagnation.

ArenaNet, the studio behind Guild Wars 3, is confident that its forthcoming MMORPG will introduce innovative elements to a genre they perceive as having stagnated. One of the standout announcements from the Summer Game Fest 2026 was the reveal of Guild Wars 3, the next installment in the acclaimed Guild Wars series. During an interview at the event, ArenaNet's studio head, Colin Johanson, expressed that Guild Wars 3 will once again diverge from conventional MMO practices. First released in 2005, Guild Wars made waves by eliminating subscription fees, a bold move when most MMOs required them. Its successor, Guild Wars 2, launched in 2012 and introduced the concept of “horizontal progression.” According to Johanson, Guild Wars 3 aims to innovate the genre yet again. "We believe that the MMO genre is ripe for new ideas," Johanson stated. "Many players have communicated their feelings that the genre has become stagnant, with the same games dominating for over a decade. This is where ArenaNet shines, as we push ourselves to tackle challenges and innovate. "It’s a risky endeavor. We could stumble while trying to implement fresh concepts, but progress in gaming requires such boldness. We are excited to explore new ideas, and we hope they resonate with players in the coming years." Johanson elaborated on how Guild Wars 3 plans to achieve this innovation, emphasizing the importance of “the joy of movement.” The development team aims to incorporate mechanics typically found in action games into the MMO framework, allowing players to experience a sense of momentum that feels distinct compared to the often rigid movement mechanics in other titles. Furthermore, Guild Wars 3's combat system is set to provide a unique experience, particularly since the game will be available on both consoles and PC, maximizing the action RPG elements. Set 1,200 years before the events of Guild Wars 1, during a time of upheaval in the lore, Guild Wars 3 will allow all players to start on a level playing field, creating numerous mysteries to explore as the game unfolds. This setting marks a significant reset for the franchise. In addition to game mechanics and narrative, ArenaNet is steering clear of subscription fees and battle passes for Guild Wars 3. While the absence of a subscription model follows the precedent set by earlier titles, the decision to exclude battle passes is particularly noteworthy in an industry increasingly adopting such monetization strategies. "We must fundamentally consider these aspects from the outset as we design our game," Johanson remarked. "ArenaNet has a long-standing tradition of prioritizing player concerns. We want to create a game that allows players the freedom to engage as much or as little as they wish. Many players feel overwhelmed by the time commitment required by MMOs, resembling a second job. "Our aim is to address this perception. We initially addressed it with the absence of subscription fees and horizontal progression, allowing players to step away and return without feeling pressured. All of these principles will carry over to Guild Wars 3." Johanson continued, discussing the evolution of monetization methods in the gaming industry, particularly in relation to battle passes. "We’ve challenged ourselves to find a way to create a game without both a subscription fee and hidden battle pass costs. We believe players are weary of these models. "Players will be able to purchase the game and enjoy it at their own pace. We respect their time and, if they enjoy it, we will offer additional content in the future without holding them hostage." With a beta slated for late next year, there's still much to learn about Guild Wars 3's systems and content rollout. ArenaNet has also confirmed its commitment to supporting Guild Wars 1 and 2 for the foreseeable future.
