Star Trek: Shadow Frontier — Paramount Aims for the Ultimate Star Trek Gaming Experience
Paramount is setting its sights high for Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, aspiring for it to be the ultimate Star Trek video game.
Star Trek: Shadow Frontier was recently unveiled during an exclusive presentation, marking a significant entry from Bloober Team, recognized for their acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2 and the game Cronos: The New Dawn. The game features Michelle Forbes reprising her beloved role as Ro Laren, who finds herself marooned on an alien world. The newly established Paramount Games Studio, which encompasses all gaming divisions under Paramount and Skydance, has made substantial investments in this project, indicating strong expectations for its success, as highlighted by Shawn Kittelsen, senior vice president and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Studio. Kittelsen expressed, "Our objective is for Bloober to create the greatest Star Trek game ever, and we are aiming to bring that vision to fruition." With numerous Star Trek titles having been launched over the years, each with its own fan base, including classics like Birth of the Federation, 25th Anniversary, Judgment Rites, and Star Trek Online, Paramount aspires to surpass all previous endeavors. Star Trek: Shadow Frontier distinguishes itself from past games with its unique approach. While Bloober is known for horror, Kittelsen describes this title as more of a "psychological thriller." He draws parallels between this game and Ninja Theory's Hellblade series, rather than Bloober's prior horror successes. "Star Trek has explored numerous genres throughout its history," Kittelsen noted. "It's a unique sci-fi franchise that can seamlessly transition from Victorian mysteries to grand interstellar battles, and everything in between. Bloober has demonstrated excellence in horror, as seen in the Silent Hill 2 remake and Cronos: The New Dawn, which showcased their venture into sci-fi horror. We view Star Trek: Shadow Frontier more as a psychological thriller, akin to Hellblade in many respects." Players should anticipate intense moments of inner conflict for Ro Laren, showcasing Bloober's expanded capabilities. Kittelsen remarked, "Historically, fans and writers have expressed concerns regarding the Roddenberry rule, which discouraged interpersonal conflict among crew members. However, such dynamics catalyzed storytelling in both the original series and The Next Generation, leading to profound personal journeys and internal struggles. Ro Laren, portrayed by Michelle Forbes, never received sufficient recognition from fans during her time in The Next Generation. Thus, bringing her back for a character-driven adventure allows us to explore deeper psychological conflicts, which aligns perfectly with Bloober's strengths." He further emphasized the importance of Star Trek's inherent optimism and hopefulness, stating, "While the franchise can delve into darker themes, it must always have a foundation of exploration and understanding rather than destruction." This game promises to reveal a new facet of Bloober's capabilities, combining their high production values, engaging cinematic storytelling, and solid third-person action to forge a distinctive experience that might surprise both Star Trek enthusiasts and Bloober fans alike. Recently, Paramount Games Studio made headlines with the announcement of its formation, which included the reveal of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, developed by PlatinumGames. While the Turtles project is still in its infancy, Kittelsen shared that Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is further along in development. This title was in progress prior to the establishment of the new gaming division, and upon seeing its potential, Paramount decided to invest, publish it in-house, and implement a strategy to generate excitement among Trek fans. Kittelsen explained, "We engaged with Bloober on enhancing the game's quality, and they were incredibly open and collaborative. As we witnessed the evolution of the game from good to exceptional, it became clear that we wanted to take on the publishing ourselves to maximize fan engagement." "We are heavily involved in its development, contributing to production while ensuring it remains an authentic Star Trek experience and a top-tier game," he added. Scheduled for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is part of a broader portfolio for Paramount Games Studio, which also includes the recently delayed Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game and Amy Hennig's Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, although the latter won’t be available until at least 2027. Meanwhile, the AAA Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG has been canceled.
