Tech Enhancements from John Carpenter's Toxic Commando to Elevate Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3

Despite a lukewarm reception for John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Saber Interactive found commercial success, and its development chief, Tim Willits, highlights how the technology developed for the game will enhance Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.

The launch of John Carpenter's Toxic Commando did not meet the expectations set by its publisher, Focus Entertainment. However, Saber Interactive viewed it as a commercial success, with development chief Tim Willits confirming that the technological advancements made during its development will benefit the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3. Toxic Commando leverages Saber’s proprietary technology to create intense zombie swarm scenarios for cooperative gameplay, building on systems previously utilized in titles like World War Z and the Tyranids in Space Marine 2. This technology will play a crucial role in the development of Space Marine 3. In a recent financial update, Focus Entertainment conveyed a somewhat pessimistic outlook regarding Toxic Commando, which debuted in March. In contrast, Willits expressed optimism in an interview at gamescom, emphasizing that the project had been profitable for Saber. "We’re really pleased with it," he stated. "Focus has their obligations as a public company, and we respect that. But from our perspective, we see it as a success. We have a growing player base and new content on the horizon." He elaborated on how the game introduced more players to the Saber universe, mentioning the impressive player counts for their other titles. "Our player engagement is remarkable. Space Marine 2 has attracted around 14 million players, which is incredible. And World War Z? That’s over 30 million people who have enjoyed that game, surpassing even the film and book audiences." Willits noted that the technological improvements from Toxic Commando will continue to evolve for Space Marine 3, creating a direct lineage from World War Z to Space Marine 2 and then to Toxic Commando, eventually leading to Space Marine 3. "Toxic Commando was well-crafted and enjoyable, demonstrating our strengths as a developer," he stated. "It showcased how fun Saber games can be with friends. The technology we developed will be further showcased in Space Marine 3, marking a significant step forward for us." When asked how the technology will evolve for Space Marine 3, Willits hinted at a broader scope without revealing specific game features. "The advancement in technology allows us to create larger enemy swarms and more expansive environments. Improved AI and potential vehicle interactions are on the table, although I’m not confirming anything just yet." Fans of Space Marine are curious about gameplay expansions. While Space Marine 2 limits squads to three characters, some modders have experimented to increase this number. Willits previously mentioned that balancing the game becomes challenging with more players, as it affects enemy scaling. Given the limitations faced in Space Marine 2, could Space Marine 3 introduce a larger player count alongside increased enemy numbers and play areas? The potential for vehicles, such as a Land Raider or even flying missions, could enhance gameplay even further. As for the enemies, while players have become familiar with the Tyranids, speculation suggests that Space Marine 3 may introduce the Necrons, based on subtle hints from Space Marine 2. Other possibilities include revisiting the Orks, who play a significant role in the Warhammer 40,000 lore, or facing the Death Guard and their Plaguebearers, given Saber’s experience with zombie-type foes. Willits shared his excitement about the ongoing development of Space Marine 3 but remained tight-lipped on specifics. He reflected on the success of Space Marine 2, stating, "The Emperor favors us. We’re committed to making Space Marine 3 even better, fueled by the passion and enthusiasm of our team. The feedback we receive from the community significantly influences our direction." He also clarified that no generative AI is being employed in the development of Space Marine 3, especially after the backlash surrounding its use in another Saber project. Currently, there is no confirmed release date for Space Marine 3.
