World of Warcraft: Forever Beta Surges with Players, Devs Astounded by Numbers
The beta for World of Warcraft: Forever is exceeding expectations as a flood of fans joins, leaving even Blizzard surprised by the overwhelming response.
The beta phase of World of Warcraft: Forever appears to be a major success, attracting a massive number of players and catching Blizzard off guard with its popularity. During the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony, Blizzard revealed World of Warcraft: Forever, a "Classic Plus" MMO crafted by the team behind World of Warcraft Classic, set in the initial year of the iconic game. Although the official launch is scheduled for November 4, the beta opened this week and quickly became inundated with eager participants. Those fortunate enough to access it experienced various issues, including frequent disconnects and significant lag when looting and accepting quests, creating a less than optimal experience. Josh Greenfield, a developer from the World of Warcraft Classic team, shared his excitement on X / Twitter regarding the enthusiasm surrounding the beta. "I had a tough time sleeping last night because of the excitement," Greenfield mentioned. "The beta has been... wild. The highest numbers I've encountered in my 17 years at Blizzard and nearly eight years working on Classic. "What we have here is truly special." This indicates a level of interest in Forever that exceeds even the initial launch of Classic. Reflecting on my own experiences from the early days of World of Warcraft, the challenges of long login queues from 2004 and 2005 are vividly recalled, and Forever is bringing back those memories. In response to the login challenges, senior game producer Tom Ellis took to X / Twitter to clarify the situation, providing insight into the launch dynamics of an MMO. The key takeaway is that this is a beta, and typically, World of Warcraft betas do not generate such high traffic. "AHMAGERD, this game is 20 years old, how do you still mess this up?!" he humorously noted. "Short answer: this is our BETA PTR environment stack, which is not nearly as robust as a Production stack. Generally, WoW betas don’t drive this kind of traffic, so this environment just isn’t equipped for it, leading to the initial issues you saw today." For anyone interested in the intricacies of online game infrastructure, Ellis's comments provide valuable insights. Fortunately, Blizzard has since addressed the issues, and the Forever beta is now functioning smoothly. "Marked live once again, and you all flooded in without issue," he reported. "Things are running incredibly well for the early hours of a public beta; the Classic team is monitoring and fixing any emerging issues, but we’re otherwise wrapping up for the night. Enjoy!" Players are certainly taking advantage of the opportunity. Numerous fans have taken to social media to express their appreciation for the updated visuals, especially the enhanced lighting, new sound effects (including the sound of rain!), and the nostalgia that resonates with those who experienced the game in its earlier days.
