Gears of War: E-Day Developers Face Uncertainty Amid Layoff Fears

Developers working on Gears of War: E-Day are reportedly apprehensive as they approach the game's launch, following extensive overtime and concerns about potential job cuts.

The developers behind Gears of War: E-Day are reportedly feeling anything but celebratory as the game's release date draws near, following a demanding period filled with overtime and looming worries about layoffs. A report has emerged detailing insights from various individuals within The Coalition, the Microsoft team responsible for the Gears of War franchise, who have dedicated five years to developing E-Day. Throughout this time, Microsoft has implemented several rounds of job cuts, but staff members at The Coalition believed they were somewhat shielded from these layoffs due to their involvement with such a prominent project. However, as the production of Gears of War: E-Day comes to an end, many are now facing the harsh reality that layoffs could also affect their team. One source expressed the prevailing sentiment, stating, "The mood is certainly 'let's not celebrate the game until we're three months post-launch, just in case', which is very unusual." Another team member shared a similar apprehension, saying, "We're just expecting the next wave [of layoffs], or being reorganized under Activision or something later this year." In July, Xbox head Asha Sharma announced plans to eliminate 3,200 positions across the organization, with the first 1,600 layoffs disclosed at that time. Last month, a further round of layoffs was confirmed, along with significant structural shifts that resulted in the downsizing of Halo Studios and the transfer of the franchise's management to Activision, which will also oversee the British studio Rare. This upheaval has left the Gears of War team feeling uncertain about their future. Employees have reported feeling "on edge" about potential layoffs, particularly following the recent and "very demoralizing" departure of Juan Vaca, the story director for Gears of War: E-Day, who was let go just two weeks before the game's launch. "I can only imagine the heartbreak of spending all those years on a game to have the final stretch ripped away, completely out of your control," commented another source regarding Vaca's exit. "It's like you planned for a year on a meal for your family where everyone will be there, and on the big day, you get locked out of the building or something and can't join in." While Microsoft has not provided an official statement regarding these concerns, it's understood that the company recognizes the hard work employees have put into bringing E-Day to fruition, including the extensive overtime, which will be compensated with additional vacation days. Although Xbox has not disclosed when the final round of layoffs will occur this year, some employees have indicated that even if The Coalition is assured that they are safe for the time being, it is difficult to feel relieved. "It's hard to believe anything [Microsoft leadership] says anymore after discarding staff in this manner," one worker remarked. Recently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella referred to the layoffs at Xbox as a "streamlining" process that was "great to see."
