YouTuber's Channel Permanently Banned Due to Hellraiser: Revival Gameplay Footage
A French streamer faces a permanent ban on YouTube after posting gameplay from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival.
A French YouTuber and streamer, J0nathan, has received a permanent ban from YouTube following the upload of gameplay footage from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. Despite his efforts to obscure the nudity present in the game's opening scenes with black boxes, YouTube deemed his content in violation of its policies regarding sexual content. The game, developed by Saber Interactive, known for Space Marine 2, begins with a controversial explicit scene that includes nudity and BDSM elements. Following this scene, the male protagonist is depicted in a similarly revealing manner. While J0nathan argued that the explicit content was vital to the game’s narrative, YouTube maintained that such material is not permissible on its platform. J0nathan contended that his video, which was labeled as "Not Made for Kids," did not warrant an age restriction since the bulk of the game resembles traditional horror titles like Resident Evil. He believed that censoring the explicit moments would be sufficient to meet YouTube’s standards, expecting the platform would apply restrictions if necessary. At the time of the ban, J0nathan had amassed a following of 190,000 subscribers. He expressed his frustration, stating, "My channel has been completely deleted, wiping out 10 years of hard work and destroying my main source of income. I’ve never had any issues with the platform before. No warnings, no strikes, nothing. And yet they just threw me away like I was nothing." J0nathan attempted to appeal the decision, but reported that the process felt automated. His first appeal was dismissed within minutes, with support responses providing generic feedback without any real engagement with his case. He questioned the fairness of YouTube’s decision, especially since other channels continue to host uncensored versions of the same scenes. He expressed concern over his secondary channel, fearing that operating it could lead to further repercussions, as YouTube forbids banned users from maintaining multiple channels. "I'm absolutely devastated. Beyond losing my income, I'm also losing 10 years of hard work and over 3,000 videos. The emotional impact is huge. Those videos represent a big part of my life, and losing them hurts more than I can describe,” he lamented. J0nathan has sought help from fellow creators and attempted to reach out to game developers for assistance, believing they may have the means to influence YouTube’s decisions regarding bans linked to their games. However, he has received no response. Prior to the release of Hellraiser: Revival, Saber Interactive had issued guidelines for content creators, advising them to implement appropriate age restrictions and labels for any sexual themes in their videos. They emphasized the importance of adhering to community guidelines across platforms, acknowledging the lack of a specific 'streamer mode' and highlighting that context matters when it comes to content review. Saber Interactive has been approached for further comment regarding this incident.
