Take-Two Seeks to Synchronize BioShock Film Release with New Game Launch

The anticipated release of the BioShock film adaptation may coincide with new BioShock game projects, including the much-awaited next installment.

The much-anticipated film adaptation of BioShock, which has encountered numerous delays, may soon see its launch aligned with fresh developments in the BioShock franchise, including the long-awaited next installment of the game series. In a conversation with Collider, Roy Lee, the producer of the BioShock movie, disclosed that director Francis Lawrence is currently engaged in post-production work for The Hunger Games prequel, but the BioShock project is high on their agenda. "We were on track to produce it a few years ago, but other films, notably The Long Walk and the upcoming Hunger Games prequel set for release this December, have taken precedence," Lee stated. He hinted that the movie's eventual debut could coincide with a broader BioShock initiative. "We're just waiting for [Lawrence] to wrap up post-production, which is expected to continue through at least September, before he can shift his focus back to BioShock," Lee added. "Both Netflix and Take-Two are eager for the film to release alongside potential new iterations of the game." This statement is particularly promising as it suggests that the publisher Take-Two is interested in launching the film around the same time as a new BioShock game or possibly multiple titles. However, the specifics of what “iterations” might entail remain unclear. When asked about timelines, Lee responded cautiously: "The project is making progress, but as always, unforeseen factors can arise. The goal is to hopefully enter production next year." Netflix revealed its plans for a BioShock adaptation back in 2022, but progress has been hindered by budget cuts affecting the film's scope and screenplay. Previously, director Gore Verbinski had attempted to develop his own version of the film, which ultimately fell through. In September 2025, producer Roy Lee reaffirmed that the project is still actively moving forward, with Francis Lawrence attached as director. "It's a complex adaptation, and there are many elements to navigate and perfect," Lawrence remarked at the time. "There have been changes in leadership at Netflix, leading to periods of stagnation and revitalization, but I believe we're currently in a solid position." Regarding the anticipated BioShock 4, following layoffs and additional delays, Rod Fergusson, known for his leadership roles in the Gears of War and Diablo franchises, has taken the helm at Cloud Chamber to oversee the development of the project, which has been in the works for nearly a decade.
