Kingdom Come: Deliverance Director Daniel Vávra Shifts Focus to Film Adaptation
Daniel Vávra, the driving force behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, is departing from game development to concentrate on a film adaptation of the franchise.
Daniel Vávra, the creative mind behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, is stepping away from the realm of video games to concentrate on a cinematic adaptation of the franchise. In a discussion with CzechCrunch, Martin Frývaldský, head of Warhorse Studios, confirmed that Vávra's new focus will be the development of a Kingdom Come: Deliverance movie. "Dan has taken on a new role, which involves creating the Kingdom Come film," Frývaldský explained. "We have been exploring ways to expand the Kingdom Come brand beyond gaming for a while now, venturing into comics, concerts, and tourism, but the film project has piqued our interest the most. Dan and I are committed to bringing it to the big screen, and we even have a draft script in progress." Frývaldský reassured fans that Vávra's departure from daily office duties does not signify a split with Warhorse Studios. "This is not a breakup. On the contrary, Dan has expressed a desire to explore new avenues. He has been a pivotal figure in creating three globally successful games and has long wished to pursue something different. Our goal is to get the Kingdom Come story on screen in the coming years, and that aligns with Dan's new role. While he won’t be in the office every day, he remains an integral part of Warhorse in a broader sense." Addressing the film adaptation plans, Frývaldský noted that interest from the film industry had been present for some time, but the COVID-19 pandemic halted progress. "After the release of the second game, we have rejuvenated our efforts with renewed enthusiasm. We sense a strong interest from filmmakers, and discussions are already in progress. Our intention is not merely to sell the rights but to ensure the film aligns with our vision." Frývaldský hinted that Vávra might take on a title akin to transmedia director, reflecting the studio’s ambition to broaden the franchise's reach beyond video games. Since its debut in 2018, the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance has achieved remarkable success, with over 10 million copies sold. The sequel, released last year, has also performed well, surpassing 5 million copies in sales. The latest installment received high praise, earning a 9/10 rating, noted for its impressive melee combat and compelling narrative, described as both a sequel and a celebration of the original's concepts. For those curious about the updates in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 since its early 2025 launch, detailed insights are available.
