Director of Resident Evil Requiem Shares Initial Doubts About Nintendo Switch 2's Capability

Koshi Nakanishi, the director behind Resident Evil Requiem, discusses Capcom's initial hesitations regarding the performance of the Nintendo Switch 2 for their latest survival horror title.

Koshi Nakanishi, the director of Resident Evil Requiem, has disclosed that Capcom had initial reservations about the Nintendo Switch 2's capacity to handle their anticipated survival horror game. During a recent episode of Creator's Voice on Nintendo's YouTube channel, Nakanishi expressed that the development team was initially "skeptical" about the console's performance after their first encounter with its design. However, they soon realized that it could run the game seamlessly after taking a closer look. Nakanishi stated, "The Nintendo Switch 2 system has enhanced graphical capabilities, so we were unsure if Requiem would function properly on it — but it did, effortlessly. When we first held the device, we were doubtful, necessitating a second look. We questioned ourselves, 'Is this really operational on the Nintendo Switch 2?'" He emphasized that everything ran flawlessly, leading them to proceed with the game's development for the platform. "Given these specifications in handheld mode, it looks fantastic," he added. Resident Evil Requiem is set to be released on Friday, February 27, available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously. While recent Resident Evil titles have made their way to Nintendo systems, this release marks the first new entry in the series to be available on a Nintendo console at launch since 2012's Resident Evil Revelations. "It’s been quite a while since a Resident Evil game has launched on a Nintendo platform at the same time as other systems," Nakanishi remarked. "I am hopeful that this will allow players who typically don’t engage with Resident Evil to give it a try. I would be thrilled if they could discover, 'So this is what a Resident Evil game is all about' or 'This is what makes it intriguing.'" In another interesting revelation, Nakanishi confirmed that a classic adversary from Resident Evil: Revelations took inspiration from a character in The Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. The Scarmiglione, depicted above, uses its shield-like arm to obstruct player shots, a move that Nakanishi noted was influenced by Zelda’s Iron Knuckles, who also employ their shields to block Link's arrows. "When I was developing Resident Evil Revelations, there was an enemy called Scarmiglione who wielded a shield, and if you targeted them, they would raise and lower the shield," Nakanishi revealed. "In truth, this enemy was inspired by the armored soldier from The Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. This is the first time I have disclosed this." With the release just around the corner, spoilers for the game's narrative have begun to circulate widely online, prompting Capcom to vow to take "firm action" against those responsible. The company stated that they believe the "significant number of gameplay videos" currently online, some containing major spoilers and clips from the game's conclusion, were obtained through unauthorized means. Recently, Resident Evil 2 director and renowned developer Hideki Kamiya remarked that individuals who take pleasure in spoiling experiences for others "deserve a thousand deaths" and should "be cursed to never play games again."
