This Week's Sparse Destiny 2 Update Leaves Fans Disheartened, As Bungie Shifts Focus to Marathon

Destiny enthusiasts express concern over the future of Bungie's iconic shooter series after a minimal update coincides with the studio's focus on Marathon.

Destiny 2 fans are expressing their disappointment regarding the future of Bungie's beloved sci-fi shooter franchise, following a minimal update released this week while the studio turns its attention to Marathon. The recent Destiny 2 Update 9.5.5.5 was released on Wednesday, and the complete patch notes are as follows: General - Resolved an issue where certain weapons were not receiving benefits from their Weapon Foundry Sponsorships when activated. And that concludes the update. It's important to note that there wasn't much expectation for a wealth of new content in Destiny 2 this week. Players are acutely aware that Bungie is currently dedicated to ensuring the success of Marathon. However, one fan aptly remarked, "I expected nothing and still got disappointed." Last month, Bungie announced on social media that the next significant update for Destiny 2, titled Shadow and Order, would be postponed by three months—from March to June—citing the need for "large revisions" to its content. When the delay was announced, Bungie did not mention the concurrent launch of Marathon, likely to avoid the implication that resources were being diverted from one project to the other. Nevertheless, many Destiny fans have struggled to envision a scenario in which the revisions to Shadow and Order would require such an extended timeline had Bungie not been concurrently focused on Marathon. In its announcement regarding the delay, Bungie seemed to imply that players could expect a quieter period for Destiny in the coming months, with only basic maintenance and balancing updates anticipated. The studio expressed gratitude towards fans for their "continued patience and support" and promised to share more details about the update as the launch date approaches. For many players, this news suggested that Bungie's attention on Destiny had shifted to a secondary priority until the summer, a sentiment reinforced by this week's minimal update, leading to a blend of frustration and dark humor among the community. "Almost 3 hours of downtime for... this," one fan lamented in a lengthy thread on reddit. "A single fix." Another fan questioned, "I'm curious - how many patches have only ever had one patch note?" wondering if it's a rarity in the game's history. "There's literally no one working on this game anymore," another player remarked. Another added, "So effectively they've dropped Destiny entirely to work on Marathon? Sigh, could have at least released the DLC you announced first." "Next blog will literally just say 'please play Marathon,'" read another comment, with yet another player expressing bittersweet humor: "You can only laugh about it and then cry about what has become of the best live service game ever." Bungie's parent company, Sony, was approached for clarity on its plans and available resources for Destiny but did not provide a response. Meanwhile, the situation appears challenging for both the developer and the nine-year-old Destiny 2, especially with mixed reports regarding the initial performance of Marathon. Last year, Sony indicated that Bungie had not met its sales and user engagement targets, following a notable decline in Destiny 2's player base. The impact was significant enough for Sony to record a 31.5 billion yen (approximately $204.2 million) impairment charge due to Destiny 2's underperformance, which adversely affected profits in Sony's Game & Network Services segment, encompassing Sony Interactive Entertainment. "For years now, Destiny has been on this steady hardening of the core audience," Destiny 2 game director Tyson Green shared in November. "More and more core players are staying and playing the game, but relatively few new players are joining. This presents challenges for a game trying to operate as a live service, especially when we aim to deliver compelling expansions to our core players." However, the timeline for these expansions remains uncertain.
