Marathon Introduces New Experimental Mode
A fresh experimental mode set to launch next week in Marathon aims to ease the gameplay for newcomers by restricting all players to basic free sponsored kits.
Next week, Marathon will unveil a new experimental mode designed to provide a more accessible experience for new players by requiring all participants to use only the basic free sponsored kits. This mode, named Dire Marsh Sponsored, will be available starting April 15 and will run for approximately two weeks. Players can only participate if they are equipped with a white-tier free sponsored kit, allowing the developer, Bungie, to observe how gameplay unfolds under these fixed gear conditions and how players progress from minimal gear to better options. "What happens when you bring a knife... to a knife fight?" game director Joe Ziegler remarked on X/Twitter while introducing this new experimental mode. "This queue is designed to help us learn more about our early gear ecosystem. Players will start with a free sponsored kit and must utilize what they find in Dire Marsh to enhance their gear and survive!" Ziegler elaborated that this experimental mode serves as a time-limited queue that enables Bungie to test features still in development with player involvement, often with some aspects not yet fully implemented. Currently, players can enter the mode in groups of two or three, whether as pre-formed teams or through matchmaking, but it is exclusively available in the Dire Marsh Zone for the time being. "This queue allows our development team to gain insights and feedback, which are crucial for refining features in future updates," he continued. "To maintain focus and health in the queue, we only run one experimental mode at a time. Once we gather enough data to inform our next steps for this feature, we will finalize it and move on to the following experiment. Your involvement in these experiments is invaluable and greatly assists us in feature development." Additionally, Ziegler confirmed that Bungie is actively working on implementing duos as a permanent feature in Season 2, following recent tests of duo teams in a similar experimental setting. Bungie has acknowledged that Marathon presents a steep learning curve, but they assure players that the recovery from challenging losses becomes easier over time. The inherent challenge of Marathon as an extraction shooter means that dying results in the loss of all gear—both what was looted during gameplay and what was initially brought in. Given the game's difficulty, this can create a frustrating experience for many players. Recent reports indicate that Marathon's budget exceeds $200 million. Although player numbers have reportedly declined since its launch, Bungie’s extraction shooter is not expected to face an imminent closure. Therefore, it is not surprising to see the company exploring ways to make the game more accessible for casual players.
