Violence Erupts During Pokémon Card Launch at Costco

A chaotic scene unfolded at a Costco in Mississauga, Ontario, following the release of Pokémon cards, leading to police involvement.

Shoppers at a Costco in Mississauga, Ontario, experienced a violent disruption during an early morning Pokémon card release, which prompted police action. An Instagram video shared by PokéStreetz captured the chaos outside the store, where Pokémon cards were scattered across the parking lot. According to reports from local news outlet 905Hub, around 6:45 a.m., a group of 30 to 40 individuals had gathered for a Prismatic Evolutions drop when tensions escalated. An individual reportedly threw coffee onto a cart filled with boxes, leading to a car colliding with the cart and sending packs flying before the driver sped away. The footage displays the crowd's reaction as the vehicle rapidly exited the parking area, pursued by several police cars. The high demand for these collectible cards, which can be resold for substantial profits on platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, appears to have heightened the intensity of the situation. This incident at the Costco on Laird Drive mirrors previous events, as reported by blogTO, where the same location witnessed chaotic scenes and long lines during a prior Pokémon card release. Other Costco branches have also experienced similar disturbances. In November, a confrontation at the St. Albert location resulted in a police arrest for assault, as noted by the St. Albert Gazette. Recently, Fraser Valley Today highlighted that multiple Costco locations received deliveries of Pokémon cards, with three pallets containing over 500 boxes. Customers began lining up early to secure their place, but at one site, the boxes sold out within just one hour. In a separate incident earlier this year, a New York Pokémon card shop garnered media attention after it was targeted in a terrifying armed robbery, during which staff and customers were held at gunpoint. This event prompted Nintendo to reach out to the store regarding its name, resulting in a rebranding effort.
