Mixtape Developers Dismiss Concerns Over Music License Expiration Threatening Game Availability
The developers of Mixtape assure players that the game's availability won't be jeopardized by music license expirations, despite featuring tracks from well-known artists.
The coming-of-age game Mixtape, rich with licensed tracks from famous bands like Devo and The Smashing Pumpkins, has sparked concerns among fans about its potential removal from digital platforms. However, both the publisher Annapurna Interactive and developer Beethoven and Dinosaur have reassured players that there is no cause for alarm. During a recent discussion, creative director Johnny Galvatron addressed these worries, emphasizing that the team took significant steps to secure long-term music rights. In a chat with Kotaku, he clarified that they invested additional resources to ensure that the licenses for all incorporated tracks would remain valid indefinitely. Annapurna Interactive further clarified the situation through a post on X/Twitter, stating, "We heard some people say MIXTAPE would be delisted due to music licenses expiring. That was a lie." Concerns regarding potential delisting are not without precedent; several games have faced similar issues in the past due to lapsed music licenses. Notable examples include Rock Band 4, which saw tracks removed last year, and the original Alan Wake, which faced similar problems in 2017. Additionally, Grand Theft Auto 4 had to swap out some songs following license expirations in 2018. It is evident that Beethoven and Dinosaur are committed to preserving both the narrative and the accompanying music in Mixtape for years to come. Galvatron shared an anecdote about a possible collaboration with Pink Floyd, which ultimately did not materialize due to the band's unlikelihood to grant permission. Nevertheless, he expressed satisfaction with the other music acquisitions, mentioning that they encountered no major obstacles and secured nearly all the tracks they desired. "There are numerous moments in the game where Stacy turns the screen and says, 'This is the Smashing Pumpkins, and it's fucking sick,'" he recounted. "You send that to Billy Corgan, and he responds, 'This is the Smashing Pumpkins, and it's fucking sick, yeah, they can do that. That’s fine.'" Mixtape was officially released on May 7, 2026, for platforms including PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It received high praise, with a perfect 10/10 review highlighting it as a "Masterpiece." Described as "a musical delight from start to finish," the game is noted for setting a new benchmark for coming-of-age narratives in the gaming realm, all executed with an exceptional flair.
