GTA 6 Pre-Order Speculation Falls Flat

Rumors suggested that pre-orders for GTA 6 would begin today, May 18, but those claims have proven to be unfounded.

Speculation regarding the start of GTA 6 pre-orders, which was said to commence today, May 18, has turned out to be incorrect. Last week, excitement among GTA 6 enthusiasts surged after a potential leak from Best Buy hinted at a pre-order launch. During a livestream, YouTuber Frogboyx1gaming shared an email he received from Best Buy's affiliate program, indicating that a pre-order campaign for GTA 6 was scheduled from May 18 to May 21. This led to speculation that pre-orders would be available today, possibly coinciding with the release of GTA 6's third trailer. Attempts to get a confirmation from Best Buy went unanswered, but skepticism about the rumor persisted. Many in the community were reminded of similar situations in the past. Some fans had even placed faith in a prediction for Trailer 3’s release date based on planetary alignments related to previous Rockstar Games trailers, which also turned out to be misleading. Recently, the main administrator of GTA Forums shared insights from a verified source within a European distribution company, who stated that there were no pre-orders planned and that Best Buy had erred in their communication. Unsurprisingly, the GTA 6 fanbase, already on edge from the prolonged wait for news or announcements regarding the game, reacted with frustration. Numerous posts expressed disappointment from those who had anticipated the pre-order launch today, despite the lack of an official confirmation from Rockstar. The ongoing uncertainty leaves fans waiting not only for the pre-order details but also for a new glimpse of the game, either through trailers or screenshots. The pricing for the game remains a mystery, with only vague remarks from Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, suggesting that marketing for GTA 6 will begin this summer, alongside promises of significant value for the price. The anticipation for a new reveal of GTA 6 has stretched longer than many had hoped, with more than a year since the second trailer was released and the first trailer dropping three years ago in 2023. Additionally, the game has faced two official delays: initially pushed from a fall 2025 release to May 2026, and later to November 2026. In a recent interview, Zelnick mentioned that internally, they were aiming for an earlier release around spring 2025 before settling on the fall 2025 timeframe. Clearly, GTA 6 is running behind its original schedule. However, Zelnick has expressed his commitment to providing Rockstar with the necessary resources to achieve what he refers to as "perfection." The pressure is mounting for the game to deliver exceptional results and set new sales records. Earlier this month, Business Insider revealed that Take-Two has invested an estimated $1 to $1.5 billion into the development of GTA 6. While Zelnick did not disclose the exact figure, he acknowledged the significant costs involved. For context, most high-profile triple-A games have budgets in the hundreds of millions, with Bungie's recent title reportedly costing over $250 million. In a similar vein, court documents revealed that Activision allocated $700 million to the development of Black Ops Cold War, albeit over its entire lifespan. In comparison, GTA 6’s budget clearly dwarfs these figures. Despite the delays, Zelnick has confidently asserted that GTA 6 will not face further postponements and is set for release on November 19. When questioned about the uncertainty surrounding the game’s launch, he stated emphatically, "November 19th, I do know. It’s been announced." With only six months remaining until that date, anticipation continues to build.
