Upcoming Early Access 1.1 Update for Subnautica 2 Unveiled by Developers

Unknown Worlds, the maker of Subnautica 2, shares exciting developments for the underwater survival title, including a new vehicle and a fresh region focused on the Collector Leviathan in the upcoming update 1.1.

The developers of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds, have announced intriguing new features that players can look forward to in the coming weeks and months. Among the highlights of update 1.1 is a brand new vehicle and an expansive region themed around the Collector Leviathan. In addition to the major update, smaller patches will enhance the current Biomods system, introducing additional passive slots and fresh strategies aimed at improving early-game survival tactics. To elevate the multiplayer aspect of the game, features such as proximity voice chat, emotes, and greater character customization options are also in the pipeline. The unexpected popularity of multiplayer gameplay in Subnautica 2 has caught the team off guard, prompting them to enhance this aspect of the game. The most thrilling new elements are part of the larger early access update, which promises to introduce a new vehicle and an area to explore that revolves around the Collector Leviathan. Anthony Gallegos, the design lead, provided insights into the new region, mentioning it will host various new creatures and resources, all tied to player progression and narrative. Additionally, a new chassis will be included, which Gallegos hinted would resurrect one of the most sought-after player experiences: "So, get ready to get stompy." This hints at the return of a version of the Prawn suit, a beloved bipedal mech from the previous title, sure to delight fans. "Our aim is to let you dive back in without needing to start a new save file," Gallegos explained. "You’ll be able to pick up right where you left off. I genuinely believe it will be the most terrifying iteration of the game yet, and I can't wait for players to experience it." This news follows a recent hotfix that adjusted the behavior of in-game creatures, responding to player feedback about the inability to eliminate predators. The topic of not being able to kill fish has sparked considerable discussion, and while Unknown Worlds has committed to incorporating some form of "mitigation" to help players manage predators, they have firmly stated that killing them will not be an option. Earlier this week, Gallegos addressed the misconception that the developers intended to create a "pacifism game," clarifying in an interview that this was not the case. Despite the ongoing debate about fish and combat mechanics, Subnautica 2 has proven to be a remarkable success, selling over 4 million copies since its early access launch on May 14. The game reached a peak of more than 467,000 concurrent players on Steam, a milestone that took the team by surprise. Reports suggest that the publisher, Krafton, has agreed to a $250 million earnout for the developers, a substantial bonus that has been at the center of a high-profile legal dispute involving the dismissed leadership of Unknown Worlds.
