Anticipations for PlayStation’s State of Play: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, God of War Laufey, and More

Sony is set to host two separate State of Play streams on September 3rd, kicking off at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET / 3 PM CEST / 10 PM JST. Fans can expect a plethora of PS5 game announcements, gameplay showcases, and potential surprises. The highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Revelation has already been confirmed for the event, promising an extensive look at its expansive world. In addition, we’re promised updates and announcements from both PlayStation Studios and third-party developers. This year brings a unique opportunity with two showcases planned back-to-back, the second of which will spotlight studios from Japan and Asia. Last year’s comparable event revealed a gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, which included a release window, a launch date for Housemarque’s Saros, and a first look at the Battlefield 6 campaign. With the excitement building, what can we look forward to this year? PlayStation Studios and Exclusives Marvel’s Wolverine is likely to make a final appearance before its September 15 launch. The anticipation surrounding this title is palpable, and another trailer or sneak peek would certainly be welcomed. God of War Laufey, first revealed during PlayStation’s June State of Play, is slated for a February 2027 release. So far, we’ve only glimpsed a segment of gameplay, so fans are eager for another look. A new trailer could delve deeper into the narrative, the expansive world, and the characters that Faye will encounter on her journey, or it could highlight her combat style in contrast to Kratos. Could it be time for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet to make a comeback? It has been over 18 months since Naughty Dog first showcased this title, and we have only seen one trailer. Gameplay footage would be a fantastic addition, and fans would certainly appreciate a potential release date window. Recently, the studio announced the completion of performance capture filming with a teaser message indicating they are eager to reveal more at the right time. Might that moment be this Thursday? Housemarque's Saros was released earlier this year in April, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of additional content being showcased. The studio’s previous title, Returnal, received a variety of post-launch updates, including new game modes. Could Saros see similar treatment? The Finnish studio has been in the spotlight recently due to the departure of co-founder Ilari Kuittinen. Ghost of Yotei is expected to feature prominently, especially with its Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, which launches alongside a new roguelike mode on October 1. Reports suggest that the next installment in Guerrilla Games’ Horizon series is still in its early stages, with Horizon: Hunter’s Gathering undergoing an internal reboot. Meanwhile, with Halloween approaching, it might be the perfect time to unveil more about Until Dawn 2. In terms of other PlayStation studios, there is still much mystery surrounding their projects. It’s reasonable to speculate that Polyphony is working on a new Gran Turismo, and given that it’s been over four years since the last installment, could Gran Turismo 8 make an appearance on September 3? With 2027 marking the 30th anniversary of the franchise, it would be a fitting time for new racing content. We are also curious about updates from Media Molecule, Bend Studio, and the ongoing developments with Haven’s Fairgames, which may be undergoing a rebranding. Additionally, there are PS5 exclusives being developed outside of Sony’s direct oversight, like Phantom Blade Zero. This action game from S-Game continues to impress with its gameplay, and given its October 28 release date, it would make sense for it to be featured during one of the streams. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, which launched successfully on consoles on August 6, might also showcase upcoming DLC characters, as dataminers have hinted at five potential additions. Another PS5 exclusive, 4:Loop, previously held a beta, indicating that its release might not be far off. Developed by JJ Abrams' Bad Robot Studios and directed by Left4Dead's Mike Booth, this co-op shooter aims to enhance Sony’s multiplayer offerings. Third-Party and Multi-Platform While it’s not guaranteed, there is a slim chance that we might catch a glimpse of GTA 6 in the first of the two events. Following last week’s detailed showcase, a brief follow-up would not be out of the question. What is certain is that the first showcase will conclude with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, offering an in-depth look at its world. Additionally, could we see Sora and friends return in Kingdom Hearts 4 as it continues to reveal its content? Saber Interactive's John Wick game, announced in February, could also make an appearance, alongside a look at the newly revealed Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, which marks a return to the franchise’s 2D roots. Other titles potentially making a comeback include Control Resonant and Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the classic Lara Croft adventure, seems like a natural fit for a State of Play feature, given its significance in PlayStation history. Similarly, could we receive another look at Resident Evil: Veronica? In addition to the two Marvel games already mentioned, there’s a chance we might hear more about Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which has been delayed indefinitely past early 2026. If this action-adventure game featuring Captain America and Black Panther, developed by Amy Hennig, is indeed in the works, fans would undoubtedly welcome gameplay footage. Lastly, there's Project Windless, a quirky action-adventure featuring a towering chicken character, which is sure to intrigue or terrify in equal measure.
