Riot Co-Founder Describes League of Legends MMO as the Ultimate Challenge, Five Years Post Announcement
Riot Games continues development on its long-anticipated MMO, with co-founder Mark Merrill referring to it as the studio's 'ultimate challenge.'
Riot Games, the studio behind League of Legends, is still hard at work on its massive multiplayer online game (MMO). Recently, co-founder Mark Merrill referred to this ambitious project as the company’s 'ultimate challenge' or 'grail quest.' The announcement of the MMO dates back five years to August 2021. Since then, the project has undergone multiple changes and has seen several prominent developers leave. However, during a conversation with Greg Miller from Kinda Funny Games at PAX, Merrill assured fans that development is ongoing. He stated, 'We understand what players are hoping for. The challenge lies with us as a team to execute successfully.' Merrill humorously noted that Riot refers to the MMO as the 'grail' because, 'a lot of brave knights might fall on this quest. But hey, it’s the grail, so we’re going for it.' He elaborated, 'That’s the kind of mindset we strive to foster, although it’s not easy to maintain at a large scale. I believe we’re managing it reasonably well, and the outlook is very promising.' Despite these optimistic remarks, many fans, particularly from the fighting game community, expressed skepticism. Recently, Riot announced that its fighting game, 2XKO, will cease active development by the end of the year due to insufficient player engagement, having only launched in late 2025. This has fueled doubts among players regarding the MMO's potential success. Comments from users on social media reflected this skepticism, with one user stating, 'They’re hyping this MMO as if they won’t just abandon it after six months because it doesn’t outperform WoW.' Another remarked, 'It’s set to release alongside a Final Fantasy XIV expansion, which feels like a death sentence for it.' Questions linger about whether the League MMO will actually be released. In January, former World of Warcraft producer Raymond Bartos joined Riot, sparking some renewed optimism among fans. This appointment followed a 'reset' of the MMO project in 2024, with Merrill confirming that the team had returned to the drawing board 'some time ago.' Concerns arose in 2022 when former executive producer Greg Street cautioned fans that there was 'no guarantee' the League MMO would come to fruition. He later announced his departure from Riot in early 2023. Two years ago, while announcing the development reset, Merrill acknowledged the frustrations fans felt regarding the slow progress but insisted that the time taken would ultimately benefit the project. 'Remember, no news is good news,' he said, emphasizing that the team is devoted to creating something players will truly enjoy.
