Hideo Kojima Discusses Sony's Departure from Physint in Exclusive Interview

In his first interview following the news that Sony would no longer support Physint, Hideo Kojima shares the details of his experience and future plans for the project.

In June, Hideo Kojima was invited to a Zoom meeting by Sony, just as he was immersed in his work on two games: the Xbox title OD and PlayStation's Physint, a project he viewed as a spiritual successor to his iconic Metal Gear Solid series. Accompanied by Shinji Hirano, president of Kojima Productions, and Aki Saito, head of talent development, Kojima was taken aback by the news delivered during the call. Sony announced it would cease funding for the Physint project, leaving Kojima in a state of disbelief. Initially, he chose to keep this shocking information from his team at Kojima Productions, fearing the implications for their future. Would he have to lay off members of the Physint team? Would they leave on their own? He was also concerned about the bank's perception of his studio, especially since they had provided loans following the success of Death Stranding. Additionally, what would happen to the actors he had already scanned for the game? This situation echoed his past experience with P.T. However, Kojima managed to persuade Microsoft and Xbox's new leader, Asha Sharma, to take over Physint, marking a significant shift in console partnerships that could lead to the game not being released on PlayStation at all. In an interview with Daniel Robson, Kojima expressed his apprehensions about the potential collapse of Kojima Productions due to Sony's decision. He explained how he quickly crafted a proposal to present to Xbox, which was eager to back the project. It's worth mentioning that the interview took place prior to a report from Bloomberg, which suggested that Sony’s withdrawal from Physint was due to issues such as unmet deadlines, budgetary constraints, and concerns over the commercial performance of Death Stranding. In response to these claims, Kojima Productions released a statement asserting that they are in a strong financial position, development on Physint is progressing with Xbox, and their relationship with PlayStation remains intact. Kojima remarked, "As an independent entity, we rely on project contracts for funding. I need to secure new projects to ensure our survival as an indie studio." Reflecting on the June Zoom call, he recounted, "When they told me they could no longer fund Physint, I was stunned. I couldn't wrap my head around what I was hearing. My immediate concern was for my studio and the people working there. Losing a project could mean layoffs or worse." He shared that he had expanded his team with the expectation of working on Physint, and losing that project could jeopardize their livelihoods. "My first thought was, 'What will happen to my team?'. With about 200 talented individuals relying on this project, I knew I had to protect them." Kojima also expressed his appreciation for Sony, stating, "I've collaborated with them for nearly three decades. While the relationship has changed, I understand the challenges in the gaming industry right now." The 10th anniversary of his studio and his 40th year in game development made Physint particularly significant for Kojima. He was determined to pursue the project despite the challenges presented by Sony's decision. After the meeting, he returned to his desk and began refining the concept for Physint, keeping the news from his staff until they could devise a plan. He considered reaching out to third-party partners instead of first-party studios for potential collaboration. Kojima aimed to break the traditional mold of pitching a single game idea for funding. He envisioned creating a new intellectual property that encompassed various forms of media, such as films, television, and music. He sought support not just financially, but also technically and in terms of marketing. His outreach to potential partners received a positive response, leading him to approach Xbox, who he felt could offer both technical assistance and had an existing relationship through their work on OD. He prepared a comprehensive pitch for Physint, setting the stage for a new chapter in his creative journey.
