Subsequently, more staff join to delve deeper into the cultural fabric, stories, and the local populace. "Every game begins with research trips. It allows us to explore both the location and our concepts as a collective," stated Aaron Garbut, head of development. "Initially, a small group traveled from Miami through nearby towns and the scenic Florida Keys down to Key West. This is arguably the most enjoyable aspect of the project—being on a road trip with friends for days, discussing our aspirations while immersing ourselves in the environment." Garbut captures every moment with his camera and phone. During one particularly memorable outing, a group of Rockstar developers flew low over the mangrove inlets of the Everglades, concluding their day by hovering above a stadium hosting a live Beyoncé concert. "We might have even made the local news that day," Garbut recalled. The team immerses themselves in the community, engaging with locals to gather stories and insights. They spend time with both police officers and gang members, describing the experience as enlightening yet at times intimidating. "Everyone we met was welcoming, though some were quite daunting. We wanted to understand all aspects of the area; the stories and details we uncovered could be quite chilling. Our goal is to create a believable and diverse world, which requires thorough research." According to Garbut, Miami encapsulates stark contrasts—kind-hearted individuals, immense wealth alongside severe poverty, extravagance, and the hustle of everyday life. "These research trips are about experiencing extremes, allowing us to incorporate these elements into the game in unexpected ways." Such unexpected elements may manifest as authentic dialogue or radio shows and advertisements, which Rockstar emphasizes as integral to the game world rather than secondary elements. Every detail matters in crafting an environment where players will spend countless hours. In creating a contemporary GTA experience, Rockstar consciously chooses not to replicate real-life viral events, as the lengthy development cycle could render such references outdated. Instead, the satire in GTA 6 will address modern cultural themes, conspiracy theories, and the peculiar reactions to significant events.
