Wizards of the Coast Declares MTG's Reality Fracture Commander Deck as One of Its Strongest Releases

The latest Commander preconstructed deck, Multiverse Reforged, is hailed by Wizards of the Coast as potentially one of the most powerful in the game's history.

The Reality Fracture set in Magic: The Gathering wraps up a narrative arc with style, showcasing alternate-reality iterations of beloved characters from the game's history. With a busy release schedule in 2026, this set is poised to be one of the standout offerings. Despite the large array of impressive cards, Wizards of the Coast has opted to launch just one preconstructed Commander deck, mirroring their approach with this year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles release. To gain insight into their decision, we spoke with Gavin Verhey, a Game Designer for Magic: The Gathering, about the reasoning behind limiting the number of precons and his thoughts on the deck's strength. Verhey explained, "We often encounter challenges when releasing two Commander decks, especially if one significantly overshadows the other." He referenced this year's Lorwyn Eclipsed as the last instance where two precons were introduced. He continued, "For instance, stores might find one deck lingering on shelves while the other sells out instantly. We discussed this, but it was difficult to envision a deck that could surpass the excitement of the Jace Echoverse deck," referring specifically to Multiverse Reforged. Consequently, the decision was made to create a single deck infused with added resources, featuring new cards and an eye-catching four-color theme. Having played several matches with Multiverse Reforged, the term 'splashy' seems inadequate to describe its contents. The deck is filled with exceptional cards, including alternate versions of legendary creatures from the game’s history, such as The Ur-Sphinx, alongside a formidable Planeswalker Commander in Jace. Similar to the Turtle Power deck, Multiverse Reforged presents itself as a versatile toolkit, ready for customization. However, Verhey reveals that the team at Wizards of the Coast views this precon as a true powerhouse right from the start. "It's amusing that many see it as a toolkit," Verhey remarked, "because internally, we consider this precon one of the strongest we've ever created!" He added, "The theme of the deck is conducive to a high number of individually intriguing legends, which contributes to that toolbox impression. I can envision more themes in the future that incorporate a variety of new legends." Have you had the chance to play with or against Multiverse Reforged? Share your experiences in the comments.
