Stranger Than Heaven: A New Era for RGG Studio with Current-Gen Exclusivity
RGG Studio aims to elevate gameplay by focusing solely on current-gen consoles for Stranger Than Heaven.
Stranger Than Heaven is poised to be RGG Studio's most advanced title to date, primarily because it is being developed exclusively for the latest gaming hardware. Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto shared insights during an interview at the Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2026, confirming this approach. "Our intention with Stranger Than Heaven is to craft an entirely new experience, pushing the boundaries of quality that we can deliver in the present day," Sakamoto remarked. "Thus, we made the decision to forgo support for older platforms such as the PS4, allowing us to focus on delivering the best experience on current-gen consoles like the PS5." Since the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2020, RGG Studio has typically aimed to cater to both older and newer systems. Their upcoming title, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, is set to run across both generations of PlayStation and Xbox. While the Xbox One support was dropped for Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties earlier this year, PlayStation 4 compatibility remained. However, by committing to develop Stranger Than Heaven exclusively for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, the team is free from hardware limitations that previously hindered their vision for this expansive journey through early 20th century Japan. Sakamoto elaborated, "Previously, we faced hardware limitations that restricted the number of characters displayed on screen and forced us to make compromises. With Stranger Than Heaven, we can fully utilize the PS5's power, allowing for more characters on-screen simultaneously and significantly enhancing character detail." Despite some concerns regarding the game's digital portrayal of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, Michael Higham found much to appreciate about Stranger Than Heaven in his recent preview. With the game set to launch in just over two months, Sakamoto expressed confidence in their progress, stating, "I believe we have achieved our aim of delivering a richer visual experience with a stronger artistic identity than ever before." Additionally, Sakamoto confirmed that Stranger Than Heaven will feature in-game “cheats,” enhancing gameplay options for players. The release date for Stranger Than Heaven is January 15, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
