Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Players on Nintendo Switch 2 Face Serious Input Lag Issues

Gamers engaging in competitive Multiplayer on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 may find themselves at a significant disadvantage due to severe input lag compared to other platforms.

Players diving into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 should be cautious, as they may encounter a considerable disadvantage in competitive Multiplayer due to significant input lag that far exceeds that of other gaming platforms. An analysis by Digital Foundry reveals that the input lag on the Switch 2 version of Modern Warfare 4 can be twice as long as that experienced on the PlayStation 5, which operates at 60 frames per second (fps). In the realm of competitive Multiplayer, the Switch 2 version aims for 60fps and generally achieves this target; however, certain elements can cause frame rate drops, particularly when using the transparent visor of a riot shield. Call of Duty Multiplayer is known for its consistent 60fps gameplay, which ensures a smooth and responsive experience for players who prioritize their kill/death ratios in matches like 6v6. It is essential for all platforms offering the game to maintain at least 60fps to ensure a fair competition among players, although discussions regarding the advantages of PC players over consoles have been ongoing since the introduction of crossplay. Digital Foundry notes that the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support can alleviate some frame rate drops on compatible displays, but playing in handheld mode can lead to poorer performance. When examining responsiveness, the tests indicated 81 milliseconds of lag in docked mode and 100 milliseconds in portable mode, which is notably longer than the PS5's 49.1 milliseconds. The Multiplayer experience in portable mode varied between 83 milliseconds at best and 125 milliseconds at worst, leading Digital Foundry to describe this as detrimental to gameplay performance. Despite these concerns, Digital Foundry generally approves of the Switch 2 adaptation, which was managed by Digital Legends with assistance from Infinity Ward. However, those who prefer Multiplayer modes will find themselves at a consistent disadvantage, as the Switch 2's slower response times affect even the quickest of players. Conversely, the Campaign mode operates at 30fps, a rate that Simon Cardy found acceptable during his gameplay experience with the Switch 2 version. He remarked that while the textures are not as intricate—resulting in smoother surfaces and characters resembling plastic models—the gameplay remains fluid, achieving 30fps at 4K resolution when docked. Cardy acknowledged the visual downgrades compared to platforms like PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, stating that this is to be expected given the Switch's limitations. However, he maintained that for Nintendo fans who have been without access to Call of Duty for over ten years, this edition of Modern Warfare 4 delivers a fast-paced experience, albeit with less visual clarity compared to Nintendo's typical graphical standards. The return of Call of Duty to a Nintendo console after 14 years is attributed to Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. As part of Microsoft's strategy to address regulatory concerns surrounding the buyout, they made a 10-year commitment to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms post-merger. As Phil Spencer, the former head of Xbox, stated in December 2022, "Microsoft is committed to helping bring more games to more people—however they choose to play." Now, with the acquisition finalized, Call of Duty has made its way to the Switch 2.
