Former Developer Suggests Rockstar May Prioritize GTA 6 PC Release Due to AI Clones
A former developer indicates that Rockstar might expedite the PC launch of GTA 6 following its console debut due to rising concerns over AI-generated game clones.
According to insights from a former developer, Rockstar Games could be looking to launch Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC shortly after its console release. This speculation is driven by the increasing prevalence of AI-generated game clones. In a discussion with a gaming publication, Obbe Vermeij, who previously served as the technical director at Rockstar North, expressed that the surge of AI-driven clones is likely motivating Rockstar to expedite the PC version of GTA 6. He noted that enthusiasts are leveraging AI technology to produce clones of popular games and distribute them on unconventional platforms. Examples include adaptations of Minecraft on social media sites and modders combining elements from Minecraft and Elden Ring. Notably, Rockstar's own Grand Theft Auto 5 was playable in a web browser last month before it was taken down. In response to these developments, AI company Anthropic has rolled out updates for its Claude model to limit its use in generating video game clones. Nevertheless, there remains apprehension that GTA 6 could be available on PC soon after its launch on PlayStation and Xbox. Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding the security of the PS5, as Sony appears to be combating ongoing attempts by hackers to jailbreak the console's latest firmware ahead of GTA 6's release. This situation raises fears that if a jailbreak is developed for the firmware version necessary for GTA 6, it could lead to piracy on the PS5 and potentially facilitate an early PC release of the game. Vermeij remarked on the transformative impact of generative AI, stating, "If I were in Rockstar's shoes, I would be worried that someone might take the PS5 version and use AI to convert it to PC. While it may not match their quality, it could still negatively affect their sales. I wouldn’t be surprised if they aimed to align the release schedules more closely, but I can’t claim to know their strategy." He further acknowledged the challenges in protecting against such threats, suggesting that while large corporations like Take-Two could pursue legal actions, the efficacy of AI in replicating games might not be sufficient for high-profile titles. In an earlier report, it was mentioned that Rockstar is targeting a PC release for GTA 6 in the first quarter of 2027. If accurate, this would mean that the game could arrive on PC just months after its debut on consoles, which is set for November 19, 2026. This timeline differs from the nearly two-year gap that existed between the console and PC releases of GTA 5. The potential PC launch could coincide with the unveiling of GTA 6's multiplayer mode, often referred to by fans as GTA Online 2. While Rockstar has not officially confirmed an online mode for the upcoming title, Twitch executive Dan Clancy recently hinted that this multiplayer experience might debut next year. Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two, has consistently provided vague responses when asked about the PC launch of GTA 6, directing inquiries to Rockstar for definitive announcements. Previously, Zelnick stated that Rockstar prioritizes console releases to ensure the core audience is properly catered to before addressing other platforms. Historically, titles such as Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5, LA Noire, Max Payne 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2 have all seen their PC releases follow their initial console launches. While the core audience for GTA may predominantly lean towards consoles, the franchise boasts a substantial active player base on PC, primarily driven by GTA Online and role-playing servers. Anticipation for GTA 6 is palpable, with analysts predicting the game could generate over $5 billion in revenue during its launch week. The official release date for GTA 6 is set for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
