Crystal Dynamics Remains Dedicated to Tomb Raider Series Despite Recent Layoffs
Despite facing its fourth round of layoffs in a year, Crystal Dynamics expresses unwavering commitment to the Tomb Raider franchise.
Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind Tomb Raider: Catalyst, has reaffirmed its dedication to the future of the iconic Lara Croft series, even as it announces another round of layoffs. This marks the fourth time in a year that the developer has had to reduce its workforce. The company revealed on LinkedIn that it would be letting go of 20 employees, which includes members from both development and central operations teams. The announcement highlighted the emotional toll of such decisions, particularly in light of previous restructuring efforts undertaken last year. Following its acquisition by Embracer in 2022, Crystal Dynamics employed 273 people across its offices in Austin, Bellevue, and San Mateo. In the time since, the studio has faced three rounds of layoffs in March, August, and November 2023, in addition to ten job cuts earlier in the same year. The latest round further reduces the staff, though the current number of remaining employees has not been disclosed. As the studio's projects progress to different stages of development, management stated they are continuously evaluating their team structures to better align with long-term objectives. They expressed regret over the layoffs, noting that while they strive to find new roles for affected employees, this was deemed a necessary step. The studio expressed gratitude for the dedication and effort of those leaving, offering severance packages and job placement assistance to support their transition. They encouraged the community to reach out if they are aware of job opportunities for talented developers. In closing, Crystal Dynamics reassured fans that despite the challenging news, they are wholeheartedly committed to the ongoing development of the upcoming Tomb Raider titles. Currently in the works are two games: Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original 1996 game set to launch later this year, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, an entirely new installment anticipated for next year. Alix Wilton Regan has been cast as the voice of Lara Croft for both titles, succeeding Camilla Luddington, who previously voiced the character in the Survivor Trilogy. Both games are being published by Amazon Game Studios, which has also faced its share of challenges, including project cancellations and layoffs. Additionally, a Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, starring Sophie Turner of Game of Thrones fame, is currently in production in Surrey, England.
