Hypixel Studios Takes Legal Steps Against Imitator
Hypixel Studios is pursuing legal action against a game resembling Hytale that appeared on the Nintendo eShop.
Hypixel Studios, the team behind the sandbox RPG Hytale, is initiating legal proceedings against a game that closely mimics its title and gameplay. The title in question, Hytale: Sandbox RPG, recently launched on the Nintendo eShop and bears notable resemblances not just in name but also in its art style and marketing visuals. Simon Collins-Laflamme, the founder of Hypixel Studios, acknowledged awareness of the infringing game, stating on X/Twitter, "Yes, our legal team is on it." Interestingly, this clone seems to have been created by the same developers responsible for Coin Pit, which has been criticized as a deceptive imitation of Clover Pit. Frustration has been expressed by Hytale enthusiasts regarding the prevalence of similar games on the Switch eShop. One fan remarked on Reddit, "This is merely the beginning of the issues present on the eShop. It's filled with imitation games, even after Nintendo claimed they would be addressing this problem." Another user shared their close call with the clone, saying, "I recently purchased a Switch 2 and stumbled upon this in the eShop. My initial thought was, 'How did Hytale come to Switch before Steam?' It's astonishing how little scrutiny Nintendo applies to their offerings." Hytale is not alone in facing such challenges from copycat games. Numerous popular titles have seen low-quality clones emerge as unscrupulous developers attempt to trick players into buying their imitations. Last year, for example, The Pokémon Company was awarded significant damages for a Chinese mobile game called Pocket Monster: Remake, which featured unmodified artwork of Pikachu from Pokémon Yellow and other iconic characters. Currently, the authentic Hytale is in early access on PC and can be acquired exclusively through its official website. The game combines the creative freedom of a sandbox with RPG elements, allowing players to navigate a procedurally generated realm filled with dungeons, secrets, and diverse creatures, and to shape the world block by block. Our early access review of Hytale rated it 7/10, noting, "Hytale's Early Access launch presents an enjoyable alternative to Minecraft, with thoughtful enhancements and ample potential for development."
